As we continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced IP Lawyer to join our Legal and Intellectual Property team in Oxford. This is a unique opportunity to help protect and maximise the value of cutting-edge innovations that will define the future of battery technology.
The Role
Reporting to the Deputy General Manager - Legal & IP, you will play a critical role in developing and protecting Agratas' intellectual property assets across multiple jurisdictions.
Working closely with scientists, engineers, commercial teams and external advisers, you will support the company's patent strategy, trademark protection, technology collaborations and broader commercial initiatives. You will provide commercially focused legal advice that enables innovation while effectively managing risk.
This role offers exposure to a broad range of intellectual property matters in a fast-paced, highly innovative environment.
Key Responsibility Areas
What You'll Be Doing
Patent Strategy & Portfolio Management
- Support the development and execution of Agratas' global patent strategy.
- Manage patent prosecution activities alongside external patent attorneys.
- Assist with freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments and patent landscape reviews.
- Support IP enforcement activities and infringement matters.
- Contribute to patent portfolio development and optimisation.
Trademark & Copyright Protection
- Support the management, registration and enforcement of trademark portfolios.
- Advise on copyright protection and ownership matters.
- Conduct trademark clearance reviews and risk assessments.
Commercial & Technology Transactions
- Draft, review and negotiate intellectual property provisions within:
- Commercial agreements
- Technology collaborations
- R&D partnerships
- Licensing arrangements
- Strategic business partnerships
- Employment and consultancy agreements
- Advise on IP ownership, assignments, licensing structures and commercialisation strategies.
Business Partnering
- Provide practical, commercially focused advice to stakeholders across R&D, Engineering, Procurement, HR and Business Operations.
- Work closely with innovation teams to identify and protect valuable IP assets.
- Deliver guidance on the use of third-party intellectual property and associated risks.
Governance & Risk Management
- Support IP disputes and enforcement strategies.
- Develop and maintain IP policies, processes and best practices.
- Ensure robust documentation and record management for audits, reviews and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor legal developments and emerging trends in intellectual property law.
Job Context
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Qualified UK Solicitor or UK/EPO Qualified Patent Attorney with a valid practising certificate.
- Significant intellectual property experience, ideally gained within a leading law firm and/or in-house legal function.
- Strong expertise across patents, trademarks and copyrights.
- Experience advising on IP ownership, licensing and technology-related agreements.
- Strong understanding of UK and international intellectual property law.
- Ability to identify legal risks and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- High attention to detail with the ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment.
- Collaborative approach and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable
- Previous experience as in-house IP Counsel within manufacturing, engineering, technology, automotive, energy, chemicals or advanced materials sectors.
- Experience supporting research and development organisations.
- Exposure to battery technology, clean technology, energy storage or related industries.
- Experience managing external patent and trademark counsel across multiple jurisdictions.
